AWHC’s Humane Fertility Control Program

The American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC) operates the world’s largest fertility control program for wild horses. In a cooperative with the state of Nevada, we are managing a herd of over 3,000 horses on 300,000 acres of land. In under three years of our program, we have safely reduced the foaling rate by well over 40% proving that if a non-profit can stabilize population growth on the range without a single removal, then the Bureau of Land Management surely can too. Watch our mini-documentary at left, to learn more about this groundbreaking program, understand the vaccine PZP, and see the mustangs you are helping through your support of AWHC.

Why We Don’t Support the Adoption Incentive Program

The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Adoption Incentive Program (AIP) was implemented in March 2019 in an attempt to increase the number of wild horses and burros adopted or sold into private care. The goal of the program was to clear the holding pens and make room for the mass roundups and removals. However, the program backfired and has resulted in alarming numbers of BLM horses and burros subjected to cruel conditions and sold at kill pens where they are purchased for slaughter.

Why We Document Roundups

One of the most common questions we receive from the public is, “Why are you just documenting the roundups?” We understand this frustration as watching wild horses being stampeded by helicopters is heartbreaking. But we are out there to hold the federal government accountable in order to make a larger case. In the video at left, you will follow a member of our team on a roundup to see what it looks like for us.
